Don’t Let a Missing IEC Code stop Your ₹25 Lakh Export Order
Customs won’t clear your shipment, and your transporter can’t move an inch without it. While the DGFT portal can be a maze of AD Code delays and bank verification errors, we simplify the chaos.
IEC Code Registration — Get Your Import Export License Online in 24 Hours
You got an export order of Rs 25 lakh to Dubai. You’re ready to ship. You contact your Transfer agent.
They ask: “What’s your IEC code number?”
You say: “IEC? What’s that?”
They say: “Import Export Code. From DGFT. Mandatory for customs clearance. Without it, your shipment won’t leave India.”
You panic. The order delivery deadline is 10 days. You Google “IEC code registration.” Found a portal (dgft.gov.in). Tried registering. Portal asks for “AD Code” (you don’t know what that is). Bank account verification pending. Form has 15 fields you don’t understand. You’re stuck.
This happens to 70% of first-time exporters.
At Team IN Filings Bangalore, we complete IEC code registration in 24 hours — including the bank verification. We’ve registered 600+ IEC codes since 2015. We know exactly how to handle DGFT portal issues, AD Code delays, bank update problems, and all the technical headaches that make DIY attempts fail.
What is IEC Code?
IEC stands for Import Export Code (also called Import Export License, though technically there’s no “license” — it’s a registration).
It’s a 10-digit code issued by DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India.
What it does: Identifies your business to Indian Customs. Without IEC, customs won’t clear your export shipment or allow your import consignment into India.
Mandatory for:
- Exporting goods from India (even ₹1 lakh worth)
- Importing goods into India (commercial imports, not personal)
- Claiming export benefits (duty drawback, MEIS, SEIS schemes under Foreign Trade Policy)
- Opening Letter of Credit (LC) for imports
- Receiving export payments in foreign currency
Not needed for:
- Service exports (software, consulting, freelancing to foreign clients — these don’t need IEC)
- Personal imports (like ordering laptop from Amazon US for personal use)
IEC is permanent. Once issued, it’s valid for a lifetime. Yearly renewal is needed.
Why You Need IEC
Scenario 1: First Export Order (Customs Won’t Clear)
Real Bangalore case (March 2024): Garment exporter, Shivajinagar. Got ₹18 lakh order from UK retailer. Shipped goods. Customs stopped shipment at airport.
Reason: “IEC code number not on shipping bill.”
Shipment stuck. UK buyer waiting. Daily storage charges at the airport: ₹8,000.
Called us 6 PM evening. We registered IEC overnight (filed application 10 PM, got code 11 AM next day). Updated shipping documents. Shipment cleared next evening.
Cost of delay: ₹16,000 airport charges + 2 days shipping delay.
Scenario 2: Import Duty Refund (Can’t Claim Without IEC)
Real case: Electronics importer, Whitefield. Imported components worth ₹40 lakhs. Paid 10% import duty = ₹4 lakhs at customs.
They later found they qualified for duty exemption under Advance Authorization Scheme (import for export).
Problem: To claim ₹4 lakh refund, DGFT needs valid IEC. They hadn’t registered.
We registered IEC, helped file duty drawback claim. Refund of ₹3.8 lakhs approved in 4 months (₹20K went in interest/processing).
Scenario 3: E-commerce Export (Amazon Global, Etsy, etc.)
Real case: Handicraft seller, Indiranagar. Selling on Etsy to US/Europe customers. Monthly sales ₹2-3 lakhs.
Using Etsy’s default shipping (they handle customs). But after ₹5 lakh total exports, the courier company asked for IEC.
Without IEC: Shipments held at customs. Etsy orders are getting cancelled. Account at risk of suspension.
We registered IEC in 24 hours. Updated with courier. Exports resumed.
Now doing ₹8 lakh monthly exports without customs issues.
IEC Registration Process (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
DGFT IEC registration is 100% online. All filings need Digital Signature.
Who needs DSC:
- Proprietorship: Owner
- Partnership: Any one partner
- Company/LLP: Any director/designated partner
Cost: ₹1,500 per person
We arrange DSC as part of IEC package (no extra hassle for you).
Step 2: Gather Documents Required for IEC Code
Documents needed vary by business type:
For Proprietorship:
- Owner’s PAN, Aadhaar Card
- Cancelled cheque (current account recommended, savings account works)
- Business address proof (rent agreement/electricity bill/NOC from owner)
- Passport size photo of owner
For Partnership Firm:
- Firm’s PAN Card
- Partnership deed
- All partners’ PAN Cards
- Any one partner’s Aadhaar
- Cancelled cheque (firm’s current account)
- Office address proof
For Company/LLP:
- Company PAN Card
- Certificate of Incorporation (COI)
- Directors’ details (PAN, Aadhaar of any one director)
- Cancelled cheque (company current account)
- Registered office address proof
Digital signatures of all partners/directors NOT needed — only the applicant (person filing the form) needs DSC.
Bank Account Verification
This is where 60% of DIY attempts fail.
DGFT portal sends your bank details to RBI for verification. Bank confirms: “Yes, this account belongs to this PAN holder.”
Problems:
Problem 1: AD Code Missing
AD Code = Authorized Dealer Code. It’s your bank branch’s RBI code (14 characters).
Wrong AD Code = Bank rejects verification = IEC application stuck.
Example of AD Code: HDFCENR0123456
How to get it: Ask your bank branch. They’ll give 14-digit code.
Common mistake: Using IFSC code instead of AD Code (not the same thing).
We have AD Code database for all major Bangalore bank branches. We verify before submitting.
Problem 2: Bank Account Not Updated in Bank’s System
You opened account 6 months ago. But bank hasn’t updated your account in their DGFT/RBI verification system yet.
Result: DGFT sends verification request → Bank says “Account not found” → Application rejected.
Solution: We coordinate with bank before filing. Get written confirmation from bank manager that account is active in DGFT verification system.
Real case (July 2024): Startup opened ICICI current account. Tried IEC registration. Bank verification failed 3 times (over 2 weeks).
We called ICICI branch manager. Found: Account was in “pending activation” status in RBI system. The manager activated it. We re-filed IEC. Approved in 2 days.
Problem 3: Current Account vs Savings Account
DGFT prefers current accounts for businesses. But savings accounts work too (especially for proprietorships).
Problem: Some banks reject IEC verification for savings accounts.
Solution: We check with your bank first. If they reject the savings account, we advise opening a current account before IEC filing.
Online Application on DGFT Portal
File IEC code online through dgft.gov.in using DSC.
Form fields include:
- Business details (name, PAN, address)
- Bank account details (account number, AD Code, bank name, branch)
- Nature of business (manufacturer, trader, service provider)
- Expected export/import turnover
Common mistakes:
- Wrong AD Code (application rejected)
- PAN-address mismatch (PAN database address vs application address)
- Wrong bank branch name (must match exactly with bank records)
We double-check everything before submission. 600+ IEC registrations experience shows.
Payment of IEC Registration Fees
Import export code registration fees: ₹500 (government fee)
Paid online via credit card/net banking on DGFT portal.
No other government charges. Beware of agents charging ₹2,000-₹5,000 as “IEC fees” (they’re just service charges, government fee is only ₹500).
Approval and IEC Code Issuance
Once bank verification is successful (takes 1-3 days), DGFT approves the application.
IEC certificate is issued digitally (PDF download from the portal).
You receive:
- 10-digit IEC code number
- IEC certificate (PDF with DGFT seal and signature)
- This certificate is valid for a lifetime
Timeline:
- If bank verification is smooth: 24-48 hours
- If bank issues: 5-10 days (depending on bank responsiveness)
Our success rate: 95% IEC codes issued within 24-48 hours (because we handle bank coordination upfront).
Common IEC Registration Problems
Problem 1: Bank Verification Pending for Weeks
Why it happens: Bank doesn’t respond to DGFT’s verification request. No intimation, just silence.
Client impact: Application stuck at “Pending bank verification” status. Can’t export.
How we fix it:
- We have direct contacts at bank branches (ICICI, HDFC, Axis, SBI in Bangalore)
- We call/visit bank, escalate with the manager
- Bank manually processes verification within 2-3 days
Problem 2: AD Code Wrong — Application Rejected
Why it happens: You entered IFSC code, not AD Code. Or got AD Code from Google (outdated).
Client impact: Application rejected. Need to reapply (another ₹500 fee, another 5-7 days).
How we prevent it:
- We call your bank branch before filing
- Verify AD Code directly with the branch manager
- Cross-check with our AD Code database (we maintain an updated list of Bangalore banks)
Problem 3: PAN-Address Mismatch
DGFT cross-checks: PAN database address vs your IEC application address.
If mismatch: Application rejected.
Example:
- PAN shows: “123, MG Road, Bangalore 560001”
- You entered: “123, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Bengaluru 560001”
To DGFT system: These are different addresses (even though same location).
How we prevent it:
- We check your PAN card address
- We verify your proof document address
- We ensure both match character-by-character
- If mismatch, we advise updating PAN address first (via IT portal, takes 2-3 days)
Problem 4: Proprietorship Without Business PAN
Confusion: Proprietorships can use the owner’s personal PAN for IEC (business PAN not mandatory).
But: Some people think they need a separate business PAN, delay IEC filing to get that.
Clarification: For proprietorship, owner’s PAN is enough. Business name can be “Your Name (Prop.)” or “Your Business Name.”
We guide correctly: If you have business PAN, we use it. If not, we proceed with personal PAN. No delay.
Problem 5: Bank Branch Changed — Need to Update IEC
Scenario: You got IEC 2 years ago with ICICI account. Now you switched to HDFC.
Problem: Old IEC has ICICI details. Customs/banks/DGFT see outdated info.
Solution: Update IEC with new bank details.
Process:
- File modification request on DGFT portal (Form ANF 2A)
- Submit new bank proof (cancelled cheque)
- New AD Code verification
- Updated IEC certificate issued
Cost: No fee for bank update (free modification once per year).
Timeline: 7-10 days (if new bank verification is smooth).
We handle: Bank coordination for new account verification. Ensure modification doesn’t get rejected.
in November 2024: Exporter switched from Axis to HDFC. Tried updating IEC himself. HDFC verification failed (account not active in system).
We contacted HDFC. Got account activated in RBI system first. Then filed a modification. Approved in 8 days.

Export Benefits You Get After IEC Registration
Getting IEC isn’t just about clearing customs. It unlocks multiple export incentive schemes:
Benefit 1: MEIS (Merchandise Exports from India Scheme)
Now replaced by RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products) from 2021 onwards.
What it does: Refunds duties/taxes you paid on inputs used in exported goods.
Rates: 0.5% to 4.3% of FOB value (depends on product category).
Example: You export ₹50 lakh worth of garments. RoDTEP rate: 2.5%. You get ₹1.25 lakh as duty credit.
Mandatory: Valid IEC to claim RoDTEP.
Benefit 2: Duty Drawback
What it does: Refunds customs duty paid on imported raw materials used in exports.
Example: You imported fabric paying ₹2 lakh customs duty. You used it to make garments and exported. You can claim ₹2 lakh duty drawback.
Process: File duty drawback claim with DGFT (IEC mandatory).
Benefit 3: Advance Authorization Scheme
What it does: Import raw materials duty-free if you commit to exporting finished goods.
Example: You’re manufacturing leather bags for export. You can import leather duty-free under Advance Authorization. Normal duty: 10% (₹5 lakh on ₹50 lakh leather import). Under AA: Zero duty.
Condition: Export within 18 months.
Mandatory: IEC + Export-Import Policy compliance.
Benefit 4: EPCG (Export Promotion Capital Goods)
What it does: Import machinery at concessional 5% duty (instead of 28%) if you export ₹6 times the duty saved over 6 years.
Example: Import a packaging machine worth ₹1 crore. Normal duty: 28% = ₹28 lakh. Under EPCG: 5% = ₹5 lakh. Saved: ₹23 lakh.
Condition: Export obligation of ₹6 × ₹23L = ₹1.38 crore over 6 years.
We help: File EPCG license application, track export obligation compliance.
DGFT IEC Renewal — Do You Need It?
Short answer: Yes. There’s a yearly renewal required.
IEC is permanent (lifetime validity). Once issued, it doesn’t expire.
But confusion exists because:
1. Bank Details Need Updating (Not Renewal)
If you change banks, you must update IEC with new bank details. This is modification, not renewal.
Process: File ANF-2A form on DGFT portal. No fee.
2. Address Change Needs Updating
If your business address changes, update IEC. Again, modification not renewal.
Why update matters: Customs checks your IEC. If address doesn’t match shipping bill, scrutiny/delays possible.
IEC for Service Exports — Do You Need It?
Common question: “I export software services/consulting / freelancing to US clients. Do I need IEC?”
Answer: No. IEC is for goods exports/imports only.
Service exports don’t need IEC:
- Software development (you code, client is abroad)
- Consulting (advice given to foreign companies)
- Digital services (design, content writing, VA services)
- Freelancing (Upwork, Fiverr, etc.)
These are “invisible exports.” No physical goods crossing border = No customs clearance = No IEC needed.
You DO need IEC if:
- You export software on physical media (CDs, hard drives)
- You export customized hardware along with software
- You import hardware for your services business
Real case: Bangalore IT consultant thought he needed IEC because he’s exporting. We clarified: “You’re exporting services, not goods. No IEC needed.”
Saved him: ₹3,500 and unnecessary compliance.
